You might think of mono lasers as old-hat; technology from the last century. This Xanté PlateMaker 4 is no ordinary mono laser – it’s as high-tech as they get. This printer is so highly tuned that you can make plates for printing on it. In fact, that is just what is designed to do. Aimed at the smaller print-shop, the PlateMaker 4 makes plate-making for short runs a quick and clean process.

Macworld Editors’ Choice Award
Unlike the Xerox equivalent (the Phaser 7300), the CL30 is built for designers, which means it offers color profile editing software, and other bells and whistles. It’s breathtakingly fast. Output quality is as good as you’d expect from a designer oriented printer. It’s a worthy successor to the ColourLaser 21.

Macworld Editors’ Choice Award
Xanté is better known for specialty printers, such as the Colour ScreenWriter and the FilmMaker 4, but this model offers a broader appeal. It’s really aimed at graphics professionals rather than office environments, though it has much to offer both. It’s ideal for short-run digital printing, and uses ColourMatch software to make custom colour-profiles.

The 1200 isn’t as quick off the blocks as the 21D – but is still quick. It has a top paper-size capability of 330-x-482mm not as big as the newer model, but bigger than most. The quoted print speed is 6ppm in A4 colour, though in our tests it managed just 4ppm. But the 1200 still offers impressive output and it’s almost half the price of the 21D.

Macworld Awards 2002
One of more tedious products I get to review is the mono laser-printer. Sure, mono lasers were integral to the birth and boom of the Mac and desktop publishing. But I find it difficult to get excited by them anymore – until this one. The Xanté FilmMaker 4 is a different kind of laser printer. It brings the highest-quality mono printing ever seen to the office.
